I couchsurfed in Cairo. It was the first time someone accept my couchsurfing request. The guy was very friendly. He wanted the other guy he was hosting and I to go on all these “very nice” excursions where we would pay for him. The only one we did was renting a boat on the Nile at night. It was dull, but relaxing. There were many boats on the river, most of them blasting loud, horrible Egyptian pop dance music.

His main obsession, though, was sex. He was 24, but only a year removed from being a hardcore Muslim (which ended around the time he joined couchsurfing) so he was like a preteen boy. He asked the other surfer, a guy from Switzerland and I, about every little detail about sex. When he didn’t ask about graphic details, he asked us if American women were really as easy as he heard. “In New York I can just go up to a girl in a bar and ask her to have sex with me?” was one of many ideas I had to set him straight on.

My friend got a knife pulled on him when he took a similar picture. A teenage boy ran across the street and called him a spy.

I tried to catch what they were watching on the screen but it ended after I got the camera out. It was one of those “Elf Yourself” type videos of figures dancing with giant heads of Mubarak and his men.

As my friend and I wandered into the neighborhood of Coptic Cairo we heard some loud music around a corner. This lady found us once we came in sight and made us dance at the wedding celebration going on in the street. The celebration ended right as the call to prayer started, even though it was a Christian neighborhood, as the celebrators scrambled to turn off the sound system.
